The Rock Star contest was a week away—and Barbie couldn’t wait to enter! Barbie loved to listen to music and write songs. She also sang and played her guitar all the time.

“Even if I don’t win, I’ll have fun!” thought Barbie.

Raquelle had entered the contest, too. Barbie asked Raquelle if she wanted to practice together.

“I don’t need to practice,” replied Raquelle. “And I definitely don’t need your help. I can win this with my eyes closed!”

Hanging out with Teresa and Nikki back at her house, Barbie was having second thoughts about the contest.

“Raquelle really knows how to dance and sing, and I only do this for fun,” Barbie told her friends.

“Don’t let Raquelle get you down,” replied Teresa. “I can help you with your dance moves.”

“And I can design a funky new outfit for you,” said Nikki.

“You guys are the best!” Barbie exclaimed.

Teresa took Barbie to the dance studio to practice. She showed Barbie some fun new moves.

As Barbie practiced her routine, Teresa said, “You’re doing great!”

“Thanks, Teresa!” Barbie said. “You’re a wonderful teacher.”

Later, Nikki showed Barbie the outfit she had made for the contest.

“This is perfect!” exclaimed Barbie. “The glittering skirt and pink top will look great with my pink guitar.”

“You’ll rock the house!” Nikki told Barbie.

“Now I just need to work on my song so it stands out,” said Barbie.

Nikki and Barbie looked at each other and cried, “Steven!”

Barbie went to Steven’s recording studio. Steven had all the latest recording equipment and knew how to make music sound fresh and fun.

“DJ Steven at your service,” he said.

“Awesome!” Barbie said, and then Steven began to mix some of her latest songs.

The day before the competition, Barbie had butterflies in her stomach.

“I’m really nervous,” Barbie confided to Ken. “What if I mess up?”

“Don’t worry,” Ken said. “You’re a great singer, and you’ve been practicing really hard. Remember when you were a little girl and had to sing that solo in the choir concert? It went off without a hitch, and this will, too. Just have fun!”

Ken knew just what to say to make Barbie feel better. And he was right—she was a good singer. She knew she could do it!

It was the day of the contest. As Barbie got ready backstage, she saw Raquelle head out to perform.

  “Good luck,” Barbie said.

“I don’t need luck,” replied Raquelle. “I’ve got what it takes to be a rock star!”

When it was Barbie’s turn to go onstage, she was still nervous. But as she began to sing, she thought about all the help she’d gotten from her friends and how much they supported her. Teresa’s choreography, Nikki’s great outfit, and Steven’s fresh sounds had all helped Barbie prepare for her big moment.

But most of all, she remembered Ken’s encouraging words. Barbie sang with all her heart, and the crowd loved her!

At the end of the show, the host walked to the microphone. Barbie’s heart raced.

“And the winner of the Rock Star contest is . . . ”

  “. . . Barbie!”

Barbie was so excited! Backstage, her friends hugged her and cheered.

“I couldn’t have done it without you,” Barbie told them. “I had fun, and I learned so much. With all your help, I really learned how to be a rock star!”

Just then, Raquelle appeared. “Congratulations,” she said.

“Thanks,” replied Barbie. “Let’s all go onstage and sing the last song together!”

“Really?” asked Raquelle. “That’s very cool of you. You truly are a star!”
